Tiger kills man in Uttar Pradesh

A tiger killed a man near a forest in Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh.It is the eighth case of human-killing by the tiger in the state's terai area since May.'Investigations reveal that Gopal and Pratap were killed by the same tiger. Pugmarks found at the sites indicate it's a male tiger,' Divisional Forest Officer P.P. Singh told IANS on phone from Shahjahanpur, reports Sify News.

The overlap of territory at the Ranthambore national park was given to the tiger, the forestor and the conservation brigade.The tiger population has grown and villagers are struggling to hold on to their land. Conservationists are making the most out of the situation. There are increasing instances of man-animal conflict. One in every 10 tigers that inhabit the Sunderbans is a man-eater, said Bangladeshi tiger researcher Monirul H Khan. The official figure of deaths is much lower as the government only takes into account casualties against the number of entry passes.Unlike the Sunderbans in West Bengal, across the border tigers get killed by men when they stray into human habitation, reports The Times Of India.

Recently, a tiger attacked a forest range officer on the outskirts of Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur area. The authorities are filing cases against 19 villagers and Dharmendra Khandal, a conservationist from the NGO, Tiger Watch.A debate on the incident as well as the State Forest Department's response to it is being debated in conservation circles, reports The Hindu.
